Song Lyrics (2005 - 2011)

FOR FREE SAMPLE STORY FROM 'SEVEN DREAMS OF REALITY' VIEW BLOG ENTRY FOR MAY 2010...

As a keen guitarist and singer who has yet to work out how to use YouTube, here are a collection of lyrics to some recent songs of mine. I am hoping to record them as a kind of 21st century protest CD - a genre that has been sadly neglected since the 60s, yet there is probably more than ever to protest about today! The lyrics are of course copyright to myself (Adam Colton) but I am open to offers if anybody would like to use the songs in any way. For details of 3 CDs recorded as part of a male/female acoustic/vocal duo email Hamcopublishing@AOL.com

DISILLUSION BLUES
(This started out as my own version of John Lennon's 'Working Class Hero' but I decided to give it a more jaunty blues tune to offset the somewhat downbeat lyrics)

Now when you are young they will say you're the best,
And grow up to do so much more than the rest,
But when you are grown, you won't feel so blessed.

They'll tell you be bold, they'll say it's the norm,
But once you're eighteen please keep quiet and conform,
When you come of age, the advice is all gone.

Chorus:
You got the disillusion blues, since you were at college,
Where they'll give you everything, apart from the knowledge.

You try hard to help your village or town,
But the powers that be just steam-roller you down,
Still it's nice to have, young opinions around.

You could travel the land with a book you have wrote,
But they won't even part with one ten pound note,
It's a dog eat dog world, when you've missed the boat.

chorus:

When friends turn to strangers it's just such a bore,
They look down on you if they think they have more,
If that's what you wanted, you'd have sat on the floor.

You think you're OK but what can you do,
When those same old thoughts just push their way through,
There's something not right, and they want you to think that it's you.

chorus:

So do what you can, join a rock and roll band,
But don't let it all, get out of hand,
Nobody said, life would do what you planned.

So all you song-writers that are writing today,
I try to make sense of the words that you say,
But you won't be heard, till the rich man will pay.

SINGLES AWARENESS DAY
(Fed up of spending Valentines Day alone? This is an anthem for single people. Performed funk style)

Now I can tell you people everybody ain't the same,
So pack up all your love songs and take them all away,
Cause on the forty-fifth day of every brand new year,
There's thousands that are different that don't wanna disappear.

The films they make in Hollywood and every TV show,
Depict a life some people feel that they will never know,
Where are the movie shows for them? Where are the songs for me?
The singles are the hidden ones in your society.

You cut us out at Christmas, ignore us at new year,
Well I can tell you people we ain't gonna disappear,
You pass a restaurant and spy a great two-for-one deal,
Well, don't forget the ones who'll have no comfy cosy meal.

We're square pegs in a round-hole world, society's forgotten,
You handed us an apple from a barrel that's gone rotten,
These people didn't choose their lives, it just worked out that way,
Three cheers for being different on singles awareness day.

ELECTION DAY
(One of my older songs, slightly more in the vein of comedy folk music. The issues seem largely unchanged since its first incarnation in 2005)

Good morning, it's election day, good morning to you all
Please take your brains and voting cards down to your local hall
For eight weeks they've bamboozled you with lies and propaganda
They've put their letters through your door, sincere & with great candour
And now our minds are aching from their soundbites and attrition
All they do it meekly ask “make me a politician”
Then walk out with your head held high, salute the party flag
Put your dinners on account and drive your brand new jag!

Good morning, it's election day, good morning to you all
I've turned up with my card and head in hand down at the hall
There's red and blue and green and yellow, it's all so confusing
And if the parties are a joke, then why aren't they amusing?
Do we want the NHS or just MRSA
Is there a transport P-O-L-I-C-Y today?
Do I want the Euro, or do I want the pound?
And do I want to chase those foxes round and round and round?

You used to want us off the roads and travelling on the rails
But now the trains are crowded and the service often fails
Funding's cut so fares rise high – it goes against the grain
It seems you want us off the rails and on the roads again!
You want to build new airports, yet concern for greenhouse gases
You say is your priority – it's hot air for the masses
You tell us we are all at fault, and yes, perhaps we are
But everything you've built can only be reached with a car.

You tell me that you're cutting down on yobbery and crime
But is it the victim or criminal who's doing time?
It seems that we can shout abuse in street or football ground
But it's a crime to sell our fruit and veg in ounce or pound
It seems no matter where we put our cross in this election
The same conflicting policies are coming our direction
My head it aches, my heart it breaks, I can't think how to vote
I'll get my pen and put my cross right through the ballot note

GLOBAL MELTDOWN BLUES
(Written in 2010 in response to revelations about politicians' fraudulent claims and bankers obscene bonuses. This one has a swing beat to it. The meter may seem slightly irregular without hearing the tune)

I was born in 1975, in a world where only the rich can thrive
Greedy snouts are in the trough, you'd think everybody would have had enough
We can't criticise the rich folk's perks, it's no surprise just how the system works

Now, I'd pay money to help the poor, But I don't wanna pay for no war
Every year it's just the same, is it for peace or corporate gain?
Are we slaves or are we free, living in an oligopoly?

What's behind a party name? When all the policies are the same?
If you think it's right to just conform, remember slavery was once the norm
The world I see is not all bliss, so we can still do way much better than this

Councillors, bankers, politicians, have already won the war of attrition
TV and papers tell us so, we must preserve the status quo
Just to keep them at the top, and do they care how many more bombs drop?

Stop the world I wanna get off, stop the world I have had enough
I'll pay for hospitals, trains and schools, but not for them to make the rules
The gravy train has grown and grown, no wonder that the voters stay at home

I may add a second batch here soon. A few more are in the form of scribbles on sheets of A4 paper at the moment ;-)
